Wiek Hijmans (NL): E-Gitarre und Elektronik

Mythos E-Gitarre...

Biographie:

Wiek Hijmans (Netherlands, 1967) has played the electric guitar since the age of eleven. His interest in both contemporary classical as well as in popular music gave him a task for life: integrating the electric guitar in the classical tradition, thus adding a new world of sounds to that tradition. Influences from jazz, rock and an attitude stemming from extensive experience as an improviser make Hijmans both as a performer and as a composer a typical exponent from the current state of music. Wiek Hijmans' first solo cd, which was released just a good month ago, drew attention in the Dutch media: a TV appearance with Louis Andriessen, three major newspapers publishing interviews and/or reviews of the cd. A few comments from a review: "WH virtuosically performs the piece with typical Dutch clarity and with the warmth of a gypsy..this is a cd that every composer in the world should have..his Gretsch sounds so beautiful" but it can also sound like "an axe with brains". The most recent soloconcertseries was in the U.S.A: and Canada (October 2002). Hijmans will be featured at the Holland Festival's Night of the electric guitar , June 9 2003, at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam.

Presse:

"He improvised with dissonant chords and enraged melodies. Influences from jazz, fusion, and spanish guitarmusic came together in long, exciting improv's at Jimi Hendrix volume. Hijmans is a great guitarist; I had suspected that already for a few years, but now I am sure of it."
"Hijmans is a pioneer in the field of electric guitar solo performances. He lets us hear the most subtle and warm sounds and effectively undermines the prejudice that the instrument will always reside in the "lower" domain of popmusic. And why would it? Little classical instruments offer more possibilities. Hijmans plucks, strums, beats his strings...., strokes them, hardly touches them, or hammers them, like piano keys. In addition he has a sheer endless amount of electric effect-possibilities..."
